As well as being one of the best heavy weight boxers in history, Mike Tyson is known for his colourful personality and owning tigers, yes really. But what happened Tyson’s tiger Kenya?
Who is Mike Tyson
Before we get into what happened to Mike Tyson’s tigers, we must first give an introduction to the man himself.
In his late teens and throughout his 20s Tyson was one of the most feared and infamous boxers in any division.
The 54-year-old from Brooklyn, New York, is considered one of the best boxers of all time and reigned as the undisputed world heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990.
Tyson won his first 19 professional fights by knockout, 12 of them in the first round and also holds the record as the youngest boxer to win a heavyweight title at 20 years, four months and 22 days old in 1986, defeating Trevor Berbick.
He was the first heavyweight boxer to simultaneously hold the WBA, WBC and IBF titles, as well as the only heavyweight to unify them in succession.
In 1992 he was found guilty on one count of rape and two counts of deviant sexual conduct and sentenced to six years in prison, of which he served three.
After his release, in August 1995 he fought Peter McNeeley in Las Vegas, Nevada, knocking him out in just 89 seconds.
Since retirement in 2005, Tyson has staged several exhibition comebacks and has even forayed into acting, starring in the hit movie The Hangover.

Whilst behind bars after being found guilty of rape in 1992 Tyson bought a pair of tiger cubs.
Tyson told Joe Rogan on his podcast that he somehow ended up buying the big cats for $71,000 when speaking over the phone with a car dealer about purchasing a new vehicle.
“I did have a pet tiger, her name was Kenya and she was around 550 pounds,” Mike Tyson said of the most famous of the big cats in a video with GQ.
The boxing legend added: “I had a great affection for her; I kept her, I slept with her, I kept her in my room. She stayed with me; I had her for about 16 years.”
What happened to Mike Tyson’s tiger
So after 16 years, what happened to Mike Tyson’s tiger Kenya? In the same interview with GQ, he explained.
“She got too old and I had to get rid of her when her eyes and her head got bad. Oh, and she ripped somebody’s arm off,” he said.
He was referring to an incident when a neighbour had jumped into the boxer’s garden and attempted to play with Kenya. Tyson said that the tiger attacked the woman because she was unfamiliar with her.
So that’s it, a combination of the tiger’s age and a terrifying accident meant Kenya was removed from Tyson’s LA home.
He told Fat Joe in a podcast interview that he was wrong to have the wild animal in a domestic setting.
“I shouldn’t have had them in my house. I was wrong,” he said.
It is unclear what happened to the second cub. Tyson now has a poodle named Mars.
