Jan Blachowicz’s rope ritual explained: During an episode of UFC Embedded, MMA fighter Jan Blachowicz revealed his creepy superstition involving a rope noose he once found in a forest.

Light Heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz will be taking on the Middlewieght champion Israel Adesanya in a clash of champions this Saturday, 6 March.

UFC 259 will take place at the UFC Apex Facility in Las Vegas and will feature two other title fights, with Amanda Nunes vs Megan Anderson and Petr Yan vs Aljamain Sterling.

During the week leading up to the fights, the UFC uploads an episode of their vlog, Embedded, each day. The series follow the fighters around as they prepare for their bouts at the end of the week.

The second episode, which was released on 2 March, left some viewers stunned at the Polish Hammer, Jan Blachowicz’s rope ritual, which he says brings him luck before a fight.

Jan Blachowicz’s rope ritual

During an interview at his hotel in Vegas, Blachowicz explains the story behind the blue and red rope that he ties to his travel bag as a good luck charm.

He tells the crew how a year ago he was walking through a forest before a fight when he stumbled upon a dead man, hanging from a tree.

After calling the police, the fighter recalls how one of the officers asked him if he had taken any of the rope for luck.

A confused Blachowicz then googled it to find out that a hangman’s noose became a good luck charm during the public executions in Europe and the US.

A British magazine from 1882 noted that “this ill-omened cord seems to have possessed a great reputation in different times and countries for rare occult and beneficent qualities.”

Speaking about his own rope ritual, Jan Blachowicz explains: “First of all I just go to this place (for luck) before all fights and touch it. It started working.”

After worrying that someone else may discover the place and take the rope, he cut some off and sent it off to a friend who made it into a good luck charm for him.

UFC 259 will be available on BT Sport in the UK and ESPN+ in the US.
