As tributes pour in for the late actress, we explore one of Kirstie Alley’s most heartwarming roles as Diane Barrows, social worker to a young Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in the 1995 release, It Takes Two.

The decorated actress passed away Monday, December 5, following a recent cancer diagnosis. Alley’s vast filmography ensured that she didn’t stray far from our TV screens and Movie theatres from the late 1970s right up to 2022.

Alley’s children paid tribute to their late mother, telling PEOPLE that “As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother.”

Diane Barrows, It Takes Two’s inspiring protagonist

Though perhaps one of Alley’s less documented roles, many 90s kids still look back fondly at It Takes Two, a light-hearted rom-com that insisted on not taking itself too seriously.

Alley’s role saw her take the place of Diane Barrows, a kind-hearted social worker who takes care of children and spends her spare time searching for someone to settle down with.

Throughout the movie, we see Barrows develop a special relationship with Amanda Lemmon, an orphaned child who is set to be adopted by the Butkises, a mysterious, wealthy family that Lemmon has no intention of joining.

Barrows appeals to the authorities to request that she is allowed to adopt Lemmon, though she is denied on financial grounds.

What follows is an inspiring tale, as Lemmon, alongside a newly found summer camp best friend in Alyssa Callaway, conspires to escape the clutches of the Butkis family while attempting to set Barrows up with her dream man.

Mary-kate and Ashley starred alongside Kirstie Alley

And starring as the best friend duo of Lemmon and Callaway is none other than the iconic Hollywood duo, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Still very early on in their careers, the 1995 release coincided with the ending of Full House, the twins’ acting debut that saw them star in over 190 episodes across eight years.

The Olsen twins were rewarded with a Kid’s Choice Award for their adorable contributions to It Takes Two, taking home the shared title of Best Actress.

Following their appearance alongside Alley, the Olsen twins went on to star in several more Hollywood releases. However, both have since stepped out of the limelight and have pursued careers in other avenues.
