Olivia Newton-John passed away yesterday (Monday, August 8, 2022) at the age of 73 following a protracted battle with metastatic breast cancer, and curiosity about her personal relationships has risen. What is Yvette Nipar’s connection to the late Grease star?

Newton-John’s husband, John Easterland, whom she married in 2008, announced the news on Facebook saying she passed “peacefully” and “surrounded by family and friends.”

Olivia Newton-John’s most “perplexing” relationship, writes the Daily Mirror, was with Patrick McDermott, who went missing in June 2005 and whose body has never been found.

What is Yvette Nipar’s connection to Olivia Newton-John?

From 1992 to 1994, American actress Yvette Nipar was married to cameraman Patrick McDermott.

McDermott famously disappeared on June 30, 2005 while on an overnight fishing trip off the coast of Los Angeles. His birth name was Kim Chong-nam, according to his adoption card; he believed he had a Korean mother and an American father.

Before he entered into a relationship with Olivia Newton-John – they were together for nine years, per News AU – Patrick McDermott was the husband of Yvette Nipar.

Yvette Nipar and Patrick McDermott have a son

Following the disappearance of Patrick McDermott in June 2005, numerous reports emerged of investigators and sleuths claiming to have uncovered conclusive evidence he was still alive.

In 2009, for example, News AU reported claims made by US private detective Philip Klein that McDermott had staged his own disappearance to avoid paying debts and enable his teenage son Chance to receive a $150,000 life insurance payout.

The same website reported three years later that McDermott’s ex-wife Yvette Nipar was “pleading” with retail giant Amazon to stop selling a book alleging her former husband, and father of her child, was still alive.

She wrote to Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos that year to urge him not to promote Philip Klein’s book Lost At Sea. In the letter, she accused Klein of “looking to be famous at the expense of an unfortunate tragedy.”

When were McDermott and Olivia Newton-John together?

Patrick McDermott’s disappearance came shortly after he had ended what multiple outlets refer to as a “nine-year relationship” with Ms Newton-John.

The UK’s MailOnline describes him as Newton-John’s “on-off lover,” while The Telegraph called him her “former boyfriend.”

McDermott’s marriage to Yvette Nipar ended in divorce in 1994. It emerged after his disappearance he had filed for bankruptcy in 2000, owing more than $30,000 to creditors, CBS News reports.

He also had outstanding payments of $800 per month, although CBS noted it “wasn’t immediately clear how far behind he was in the payments.”
