Who is Pastor Tobi Adegboyega? Adegboyega founded Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church, or SPAC. His church is wrought with controversy, yet his following remains loyal.
More recently, he’s been linked to London-based rapper Dutchavelli in an Instagram messages leak. This link has yet to be confirmed, however.
Tobi Adegboyega starts SPAC Nation in 2008
Pastor Adegboyega moved from Lagos, Nigeria to London in 2005. At first, he shared a room with actor cousin John Boyega.
Three years later, he started SPAC Nation along with three other members. Based in Croydon, the church quickly became popular, with a weekly attendance of over 2,000 people.
However, after a run of controversies, Tobi Adegboyega announced via the church’s official Twitter handle that he would be stepping down as lead pastor.
Despite several philanthropic efforts, including sending relief materials to deprived villages in Nigeria, Ghana and Tanzania, Adegboyega’s reputation is marred by the controversies associated with the church.
SPAC Nation controversies explained
SPAC Nation aimed to be a “beacon of hope” for young people, and a “place of redemption” for ex-gang members.
A BBC Panorama episode, “Conned By My Church”, investigating SPAC, aired on 21 December 2019. Adegboyega refused the opportunity to defend himself and his church.
In January this year, Croydon North Labour MP Steve Reed accused Adegboyega’s church of financial exploitation and fraud. He also said, “I am convinced that SPAC Nation is a cult”.
“We surely cannot allow this organisation to continue targeting other young people for abuse and exploitation when it is possible for us to take steps and action to protect them,” Reed went on.
According to Inside Croydon, Reed also presented the police with a dossier of evidence and testimony from former members of the church. This allegedly included “very, very serious child exploitation, potentially child sexual exploitation.”
So, who is pastor Tobi Adegboyega?
The enigmatic pastor is a former property dealer with a penchant for distinctive designer clothing.
He allegedly lives in a house in Surrey worth £2,5 million, and drives a Rolls-Royce worth £150,000. This is one of the reasons people call SPAC Nation the “Church of Bling”.
Adegboyega has previously flaunted a Lamborghini bearing a custom number plate: PA57ORR.
While SPAC Nation has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing during investigations, some might read Pastor Adegboyega’s resignation as part of a PR campaign to clean up the Church’s image.
