Who is John Hughes, Kristen Welker’s husband? The NBC journalist will be moderating the final presidential debate this Thursday. She is well known for her reporting work as NBC’s White House correspondent, though little is known about her personal life.

Who is John Hughes?

We’re not referring to the writer of The Breakfast Club here, although Kristen Welker’s husband John Hughes does share the same name.

47-year-old Hughes works in marketing for a company called Merck. Reports are he joined the company in 2006 and worked his way up the ladder to his current position as marketing director.

Welker described Hughes as having: “Allowed me to be me. And he’s incredibly calm while I’m typically talking 100 miles a minute.”

At present, the couple don’t have children and it isn’t clear if they’re planning to start a family.

How did Kristen Welker and John Hughes meet?

In an interview with the Inquirer in 2016, Welker explained: “Two summers ago, my best friend from high school’s mother said, ‘I’d really like you to meet John Hughes’. He is their family friend’s son. I had just about given up on the idea of finding someone but we had dinner in Philadelphia, and the rest is sort of history.”

Welker has talked openly about her worry that, as a woman in her 40s, she would fail to find ‘the one’. She has suggested her story should give hope to other women her age that they still have a chance at love.

Hughes told the New York Times it was love at first sight for him, even though Welker’s busy schedule was almost the deal breaker.

He said: “I remember thinking to myself, ‘If I can just make her laugh, maybe I’ll have a chance.’”

Where was the proposal?

Hughes proposed while Welker was on the presidential campaign trail in 2016. Welker was only going to be in Washington for one night so Hughes decided to surprise her by proposing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. How romantic!
