Murray, 37, announced his retirement after a fruitful 19 years as a professional footballer. He played for Crystal Palace and Brighton in the Premier League as well as his most recent club, Nottingham Forest in the Championship.

Murray took to social media to announce he is hanging up his boots, posting: “To all the Clubs, Players & Fans that I’ve come across on this life changing journey….THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. It’s been a pleasure, hanging them up 31/05/2021”
Born in Cumbria, Murray’s first big break came at Carlisle United. He went on to score over 200 career goals.
“I feel as though the time is right and I wanted to retire at a good level,” Murray, who is set to go into the media industry, told Brighton’s official club website.

The Athletic reported that she is from Brighton, the city of Murray’s most recent mother club, Brighton and Hove Albion. She is a former dancer and the pair got married in 2014.

He said of Stacey: “I feel as though the wives and girlfriends don’t get enough praise because they are the ones that have to deal with you day in and day out. The fans see you on a Saturday afternoon, the coaches deal with you for a few hours a day, but when things aren’t going well, we take it home with us and it’s a burden on our shoulders.”
He added that when “it’s not going well” you need people around you for support. “My wife has given me that. She has made me strive for more,” he told The Athletic last year.
In 2018, the then-Premier League star and his wife were arrested over £1.1m tax fraud probe. However, they faced no criminal charges.

Murray sites his dad Martin, a plasterer, as one of his main influences in getting to the top. “I’ve got to start with my dad, Martin,” he told The Atheltic. “As a young lad he just supported me all the time, took me places, sat and waited for me in cars, games on rainy Sunday mornings.”

Murray was born in Maryport, a coastal town in Cumbria in the north-west of England, just a short drive from the Scottish border.

Murray has two children with Stacey. He revealed that he tried to teach his then-seven-year-old daughter Latin over the first lockdown.
