The latest season of HBO’s Last Week Tonight show ended on 15 November. How long will fans have to wait for the next season? When does John Oliver return?
The future of Last Week Tonight
In September, HBO announced it had renewed the show for three additional seasons – that’s seasons 8, 9 and 10. Each season will comprise 30 episodes, meaning audiences will have 90 more episodes of John Oliver to enjoy.
Last Week Tonight is set to run until at least 2023, by which time it will have been on for almost a decade.
HBO made the announcement two weeks after the last episode of season 7, which dealt with the Republican National Convention. Much of the season was understandably preoccupied with the coronavirus pandemic.
When does John Oliver return in 2021?
Neither HBO nor Oliver himself have confirmed the exact start date of the new season of Last Week Tonight. However, previous seasons have premiered in February, so it’s likely John Oliver may return in February 2021.
We’ll probably know more about the official premiere date of season 8 in January 2021.
However, there are other unknowns regarding the format of the show. During season 7’s fifth episode, John Oliver revealed the show’s offices were shut down following positive covid-19 tests. As a result, the show went on a temporary hiatus and returned on 29 March.
The team recorded all the show’s subsequent episodes from John Oliver’s home. Will circumstances be different by the time John Oliver returns to our screens? Only time will tell.
According to a report in Deadline, a recent Ampere Analysis study estimates three-fifths (60%) of all scripted drama television shows will be delayed well into 2021. Fortunately for fans of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver’s team have shown they can adapt.
With any luck, fans will see the show return as normal in February 2021.
