What is a Heather? TikTok has on average 800 million active monthly users, so, understandably, it can be hard to keep up with everything on the app – whether that’s who’s buying the app in America or asking yourself what on Earth is the meaning of a new term.
So, what is a Heather on TikTok?
In short, being a Heather is a good thing. It means being someone people like and sometimes envy. Being a Heather arguably means being perfect, certainly attractive.
If someone comments “You’re a Heather” or types ‘Heather’ between star emojis on your TikTok, be happy and let it stroke your ego.
So, at least the current meaning of “Heather” on TikTok is positive. But what are the meme’s origins?
Where does the term Heather come from?
In March, rising indie singer Conan Gray (you might recognise him from his popular YouTube channel) released a song called Heather. The song focuses on the narrative of having a crush on someone who prefers someone else – Heather.
Heather is presented throughout the song as a popular, perfect girl. “Why would you ever kiss me? I’m not even half as pretty,” reads one lyric from the chorus.
Heather, in this case, appears almost angelic to the singer. In fact, he calls her an angel in one section of the lyrics.
Speaking to Apple Music about the song, Conan said: “I hated Heather with all my heart and soul. I had no reason to hate Heather. Heather is a perfectly nice girl. She’s sweet and pure and smells like daisies – she’s perfect, but I hate her.”
“I wish I were Heather,” sums up Conan at the end of the chorus.
Who is the OG Heather?
Although Conan has never officially confirmed who the real Heather is in the song, there have been many hoax TikToks in which people claim to be Heather, only to be proved they aren’t (classic internet).
Conan made a TikTok recently stating: “When you write a song about a girl named Heather and now your entire home town hates you because millions of people are trying to find who the real Heather is.”
TikTok changed the meaning of Heather
Some may be shocked to see the term ‘Heather’ mean something good, after the Heathers Challenge became a viral dance on the app earlier this year. Inspired by movie The Heathers, in which being a Heather meant being popular and a try-hard (think Mean Girls’ The Plastics). Although, just like most slang words, it has changed meaning to pretty much the opposite.
