Who is Pastor Jamal Bryant?
Dr Jamal Harrison Bryant was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on 21 May 1971. He is 49 years old. Bryant’s parents were also in the clergy, with his father a bishop and his mother a reverend.
Bryant studied political science at Morehouse College and has a master’s in divinity from Duke University. He is also the recipient of a PhD in ministry from the Graduate Theological Foundation and another one in theology from the University of Oxford.

Pastor Jamal Bryant and the Empowerment Temple
After leaving university, Bryant founded Empowerment Temple AME Church in Baltimore. This quickly grew from a ministry of ten people to a huge church with followers in the thousands. Bryant eventually stood down from Empowerment Temple and joined New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in 2018.
Social justice activism
Bryant is known for his social activism and campaigning in the US. He led the funeral for Freddie Gray, who was killed by police in April 2015. More recently, he has been a prominent campaigner for Black Lives Matter and seeking justice for Breonna Taylor, another victim of police violence.
Bryant was married to Real Housewives Of Potomac star Gizelle Bryant from 2002 to 2009, although since their divorce they have started dating again. The Bryants have three daughters – Angel, Adore and Grace.
