Kirstie Alley discussed her passionate relationship with John Travolta on several occasions, but was she ever married to the Grease star?
Starring in the likes of Cheers, Veronica’s Closet, and It Takes Two, Kirstie Alley’s impressive career spanned six decades, granting the star household name status.
And one of the lesser-explored facets of Alley’s life was her friendship with John Travolta, a fellow Hollywood star who took every available opportunity to speak highly of the late actress.
Did Kirstie Alley and John Travolta ever date or get married?
They didn’t and were always just good friends.
Alley and Travolta’s professional relationship began in 1989 when the pair starred alongside each other in the first of three installments of the Look Who’s Talking movie franchise.
Alley and Travolta played Mollie Jensen and James Ubriacco respectively, a couple who hit things off in the most unlikely of circumstances – while Ubriacco drove Jensen in his taxi to the hospital as she went through labor.
While appearing on Celebrity Big Brother in 2018, Alley spoke of her desire to be with Travolta, despite being married at the time, telling fellow contestants how her respect for fidelity ultimately topped her feelings for the actor.
“I almost ran off and Married John”, revealed Alley, “If I hadn’t been married, I would have gone off and married him.”
Kirstie Alley was ultimately glad that John Travolta relationship never happened
While Alley never shied away from discussing her past feelings for Travolta, the Cheer star did eventually admit that she was glad the pair never officially dated.
Though she conceded that staying away from Travolta was “one of the hardest things” she’d ever done, Alley described in a 2018 podcast how she was eventually confronted by Travolta’s then wife, Kelly Preston: “Kelly came up to me, and they were married then, and she said, ‘Erm, why are you flirting with my husband?”
“And that was sort of when I had to make a decision and that was pretty much the end of that.”
Alley went on to admit that she was glad she and Travolta didn’t date, as the pair were so similar, a relationship would have been “like two blazing stars that just fizzled out.”
Travolta pays touching tribute to Alley
Just weeks after Travolta paid tribute to his Greece co-star Olivia Newton-John, the 68-year-old has once again had to commemorate the passing of a close friend.
Taking to Instagram, Travolta shared a photo of a young Alley in a white dress, alongside a photo of the pair looking into one another’s eyes, both grinning.
“Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I’ve ever had”, wrote Travolta beneath the post, adding: “I love you Kirstie. I know we will see each other again.”
The post has quickly garnered several hundred thousand likes, as mourners from across the internet have gathered to pay tributes to Alley in the comment section.
