RIP Colin Powell
Tributes to Colin Powell have been flowing in after his family shared the news of his passing in a Facebook post.
Known for his position as the first black US secretary of state, he held the highest rank for an African-American in history until the election of Barack Obama as president.
Before his post as state secretary in the Bush administration, Powell was a professional soldier who served in the Vietnam War and the 1983 invasion of Grenada. He eventually became chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, the highest rank in the Department of Defense.
Powell is survived by his wife Alma Vivian and three children, Michael, Linda and Annemarie.
Was Colin Powell vaccinated against covid?
Yes, the general was vaccinated, according to the family’s statement:
“General Colin L Powell, former US secretary of state and chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, passed away this morning due to complications from covid-19. He was fully vaccinated. We want to thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their caring treatment. We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American.”
CNN reports Powell also suffered from multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that weakens the body’s ability to fight infections. Those with compromised immune systems are more vulnerable to suffering complications if they contract covid.
The definition of a breakthrough infection by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the detection of covid in a person 14 days or more after they’ve received all recommended doses of a US FDA-authorised vaccine.
