Who is Tommy Dorfman’s husband, Peter Zurkuhlen? People are wondering after the 13 Reasons Why star shared details about his transition, weeks after coming out as transgender.

Who is Tommy Dorfman?

Tommy Dorfman is an actor most well-known for her portrayal of Ryan Shaver in dramatic Netflix hit 13 Reasons Why.

Dorfman was born and raised as a man in Atlanta, Georgia, to a Jewish family. Dorfman graduated from Fordham University’s drama programme in 2015 with a BA in theatre arts.

Dorfman came out as trans in a candid interview with Time magazine, published on 22 July 2021.

Two years after graduating, Dorfman got the gig playing Ryan Shaver in 13 Reasons Why. Ryan is the subject of Tape 8, where she was responsible for stealing a poem she wrote noting her personal problems and publishing it in the school newspaper without consent.

Also in 2017, Dorfman helped design a fashion collection with ASOS and was honoured with the Rising Star Award by GLAAD, a non-governmental media monitoring organisation, founded as a protest against defamatory coverage of LGBT people.

When did she first announce her transition?

Dorfman publicly discussed her transition for the first time in an interview with novelist Torrey Peters published by Time, stating, “For a year now, I have been privately identifying and living as a woman – a trans woman.

“It’s funny to think about coming out, because I haven’t gone anywhere. I view today as a reintroduction to me as a woman, having made a transition medically. Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out. Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman. My pronouns are she/her. My name is Tommy.”

Dorfman has been documenting her changes in style and appearance on Instagram. On one post, she stated the image revealed a “body living in a more fluid space”, with coming out as the next step.

Dorfman, 29, told People she wouldn’t change the name she was given in honour of her mother’s brother, who died shortly after she was born.

Who is Tommy Dorfman’s husband, Peter Zurkuhlen?

In the Time piece, the star also took the opportunity to speak about her relationship with husband Peter Zurkuhlen and how it has changed since her transition.

Dorfman married long-time partner Zurkuhlen in November 2016. She said their relationship had now been “redefined”.

“The types of romantic partnerships I seek out are different,” Dorfman began.

“I was in a nine-year relationship in which I was thought of as a more male-bodied person, with a gay man. I love him so much, but we’ve been learning that, as a trans woman, what I’m interested in is not necessarily reflected in a gay man.

“So we’ve had incredible conversations to redefine our relationship as friends.”

Gay Times reports Zurkuhlen is chief of staff of Get Help and programming board member of the Los Angeles chapter of StartOut, which champions LGBTQIA+ entrepreneurs.

His LinkedIn page states he is a former real estate agent who founded tech company ChipChop Systems. The 33-year old startup whiz got engaged to Dorfmann in 2015.

The pair featured together in a Boss campaign in honour of Pride in June 2021.
