This year’s Met Gala was full of statement pieces. Whether Cara Delevingne’s ‘peg the patriarchy’ corset or Carolyn Maloney’s suffragette-inspired look, many people had something important to say. This included congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), who had a dress emblazoned with the phrase ‘tax the rich’. Dressed in full Aurora James, AOC rocked the Met Gala carpet in a white tuxedo-style gown with the words ‘Tax The Rich’ splashed across the back in vibrant red.

She said while walking the red carpet: “We really started having a conversation about what it means to be a working-class woman of colour at the Met… and we said we can’t just play along. We need to break the fourth wall and challenge some of the institutions.”

Where to buy a ‘Tax The Rich’ shirt

AOC has her own merch website, which sells clothes made by union workers in the US.

The ‘Tax The Rich’ collection includes a sweatshirt, T-shirt, cap, stickers, mug and tote bag. The price of the collection ranges from $10 to $58.

She has said the high prices for her merch reflect its ethical production: “As always, made in the US with dignified, union jobs paying living wages.”
