Shirley Ballas was born in Wallasay on 6 September 1960. She began dancing at the age of 7 and, by the time she was 15, moved to North Yorkshire to partner British dance champion Nigel Tiffany.
Ballas then partnered with Sammy Stopford, and the dancing duo won all the major world titles. They married in 1980 but divorced four years later.
In 1985, Shirley got married again, this time to dance partner Corky Ballas. They had a son together, Mark Ballas, but later split when Corky allegedly left Shirley for former Strictly Come Dancing pro Kristina Rihanoff.

Mark is married to Brittany Jean Carlson, who he describes on Instagram as his ‘hippy queen’. The couple became engaged in November 2015 and married the following year in Malibu, California.
The couple perform as a singer-songwriter duo called Alexander Jean and currently have just over 92,000 followers on Instagram.
