What political party does journalist and NBC reporter Savannah Guthrie follow? Since the announcement that she will be moderating Donald Trump’s town hall on NBC tonight (15 October), people have been curious about Savannah Guthrie’s political party affiliations.

Who is Savannah Guthrie?

Savannah Guthrie is the main co-anchor of NBC News’ Today Show, a role she started in 2012. Before this, she has worked as a White House correspondent and a co-anchor of the MSNBC programme The Daily Rundown.

Guthrie is married to former Democratic advisor Michael Feldman, with whom she has two children.

As a journalist, she is known for her ability to keep interviewees from veering off-subject.

Trump announces NBC Town Hall

Since testing positive for covid-19, Trump has been clear about his refusal to conduct the second presidential debate with Joe Biden over live video stream. In place of this, the president announced yesterday that he will be holding a televised town hall event, broadcast by NBC, at the same time as Joe Biden’s town hall scheduled on ABC News.

Both town halls will air at the same time tonight, 8 PM EST, and will last 90 minutes. Donald Trump’s event will be moderated by NBC’s Savannah Guthrie and Joe Biden’s by ABC chief news anchor George Stephanopoulos.

What is Savannah Guthrie’s political party affiliation?

According to Quartz media, “the NBC town hall is the latest example of the network coming to Trump’s aid at crucial moments”. The network is being accused by some of allegedly pandering to Trump in order to improve their ratings.

Because NBC is Savannah Guthrie’s employer, people are worried she may show bias towards her workplace when moderating tonight’s debate, instead of her usual forward and headstrong interview manner.

Guthrie’s political party affiliation is considered Liberal by website Reporter Bias. However, she does not appear to openly support neither Democrats nor Republicans and in the past has been able to interview members of both parties without showing bias.

Along with the NBC boycott that gained its own Twitter hashtag, #boycottnbc, there has also been pushback against Guthrie moderating tonight’s NBC Trump town hall event.

Some have taken to Twitter to voice their disapproval.

Some Twitter comments seem to be questioning Guthrie’s journalistic integrity, as they worry she may moderate the event with a bias towards NBC’s interests.

Some political analysts are already predicting that Trump’s NBC town hall could be a “train wreck that viewers will flock to”, instead of watching Joe Biden’s event. According to CNN’s Bill Carter,”Trump is treating this as a circus. And let’s face it, at the circus, the guy calmly juggling bowling pins while trying to balance himself on a ball is never going to draw the same crowd as the freak show.”

Guthrie has been put in an unenviable position. Moderating a political debate that seems to be banking on entertainment power rather than persuasive discourse, essentially she’s damned if she does and damned if she doesn’t.

Past interviews

In an interview with Biden, Savannah Guthrie reminds the former VP to stay on-subject, even at the risk of antagonising him.

Guthrie has interviewed US Vice President Mike Pence, adhering to the same journalistic rigour.

She has also interviewed president Trump in the past and managed to keep the conversation professional and on-topic, a quality not shared by all of Trump’s interviews.

With Americans waiting for tonight’s town halls with bated breath, it’s understandable why they are wondering about moderator Savannah Guthrie’s political party affiliation. However, if her record for journalistic integrity is anything to go by, viewers can hope that both candidates’ events get as fair a shot as possible.
