Comedian John Bishop will join Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill for the next series of Doctor Who, playing The Doctor’s companion, Dan. Who is John Bishop’s wife? Meet Melanie Bishop.

How long have John and Melanie Bishop been married?

John and Melanie Bishop married in 1993. The couple have three sons, Joe (born 1994), Luke (born 1996) and Daniel (born 1998).

Despite a separation that lasted 18 months, John and Melanie Bishop are still together in 2021. John spoke about the split, and coming back together, in an interview with the Mirror in 2010.

After 18 months apart, Melanie unwittingly stumbled across her estranged husband at a comedy open mic night at the Frog and Bucket Comedy Club in Manchester. John reportedly told jokes about killing her and keeping her head in the fridge – because “I knew I’d miss her.”

The couple live together in the Cheshire countryside.

John and Melanie Bishop’s 27th anniversary Instagram posts

Last year, John paid tribute to his wife Melanie to honour their 27th wedding anniversary. He took to Instagram to post a photograph from their wedding day in 1993.

He captioned the image with an amusing revelation. Bishop wrote: “Every year she gets into the wedding dress and spins in the garden and every year I get a little bit fatter and wonder where the years went.”

Melanie, meanwhile, posted a picture of herself on the day of the wedding.

John and wife Melanie Bishop recovering from covid-19

Both John Bishop and Melanie Bishop tested positive for covid-19 over the Christmas period.

Irish Entertainment website RTE reported on New Year’s Eve that the couple were recovering from the virus.

John received his positive test notification on Christmas Day and shared his experiences on Twitter.

He described his symptoms, saying he suffered “debilitating headaches, muscle joint and even skin pain, dizziness, nausea, no appetite, incredibly chronic fatigue”.

Melanie wrote about her experiences for her followers on Instagram. She wrote: “I have no idea where I got this vile virus from … I thought I was being careful … not careful enough clearly and I also have not presented with any of the symptoms”.

John Bishop cast as Doctor Who companion

On 1 January 2021, the BBC revealed that Liverpudlian comedian and actor John Bishop will join the cast of Doctor Who.

Bishop will play Dan, who “becomes embroiled in the Doctor’s adventures” and faces “evil alien races beyond his wildest nightmares”.

Filming started in November, Bishop revealed in a video on his Instagram feed. In the same video, he thanked his social media followers for their enthusiasm following the announcement, and for their support for him and his wife Melanie during the festive period.
