The limited series was created by American Horror Story’s Ryan Murphy and stars AHS’s very own Peters, 35. The actor is known for playing other murderous characters in AHS and has been praised for his convincing portrayals.

Evan Peters studied Dahmer’s demeanor in the murderer’s last interview (warning – distressing content in the clip, view at reader’s risk) to help him get into character. Peters explained in an interview with Netflix that, after receiving the scripts, he immediately went to YouTube and listened to the audio of a psychologist interviewing Dahmer.

Peters described the interview as “jaw-dropping” as he couldn’t believe how candidly Dahmer spoke about what he had done. Evan’s chilling transformation took a lot of preparation as he revealed the process involved listening to Dahmer’s original recordings in which he confessed to the killings. Murphy also told him to read the police report.

Portraying Dahmer was one of the ‘hardest things I’ve ever had to do’

Speaking about the role to Variety, Evan said: “I’ve read so much, I’ve watched so much, I’ve seen so much, and at a certain point you’ve got to say, ‘All right, that’s enough.’

“It’s more about maintaining the idea and the through-line of why you’re telling the story and always having that as your guiding light.”

Peters explained Dahmer’s crimes were so scary everything had to appear as authentic as possible. It was a massive role to step into, coining it one of the “hardest things I’ve ever had to do in my life.”

The actor revealed: “Honestly, I was very scared about all of the things he did and diving into that and trying to commit to that was absolutely going to be one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do in my life because I wanted it to be very authentic. But in order to do that, I was going to have to go to really dark places and stay there for an extended period of time.”

Dahmer’s trial and death

Many of Dahmer’s murders involved necrophilia, cannibalism, and preserving body parts. He was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, schizotypal personality disorder, and psychotic disorder. However, when Dahmer eventually faced justice, the jury rejected his insanity defense.

In February 1992, the killer was convicted and sentenced to 15 consecutive terms of life imprisonment. Eventually, he admitted to 17 murders in total and his sentence was later extended to a 16th term of life imprisonment for an additional homicide committed in Ohio in 1978.

However, Dahmer had only been behind bars for two years when, in November 1994, he was beaten to death by fellow inmate Christopher Scarver, at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin. Scarver killed a second inmate, Jesse Anderson, and was handed two further life sentences for the murders, writes History.
