Is Jake Chessum the new covid adviser of the Joe Biden administration?Who is Chessum, and how did this Twitter rumour start? The photographer has been confused with one of President-elect Joe Biden’s newly appointed advisers this week, Dr Ezekiel Emanuel.

Who is Jake Chessum?

Jake Chessum is a photographer who was born in London and currently lives in New York with his wife and two kids. He moved to New York in 1999.

Chessum studied Graphic Design at St Martin’s Art School in London in the late 1980s. After university, he started work as a photographer right away – on the day of his university degree show, he already had a commission for The Face.

Alongside shooting commissioned portraits and advertising work, he has always been a street photographer. For his commissioned portraits, he has photographed notable celebrities and politicians, including Robert DeNiro, Brad Pitt, Michael Douglas, Hilary Clinton and Bill Gates.

In 2012, Chessum worked as British Prime Minister David Cameron’s official photographer on the PM’s trip to the US.

Is Jake Chessum the new covid adviser of the Biden administration?

The short answer is no. But here is where things get a little sticky.

Yesterday Kayleigh McEnany, President Trump’s Press Secretary, tweeted a photo of Joe Biden’s newly appointed covid adviser (not Jake Chessum).

Underneath the photo of Dr Ezekiel Emanuel is Jake Chessum’s name, credited as the photographer who took Dr Emanuel’s photo. The photo was taken by Chessum for Dr Emanuel’s October 2014 The Atlantic feature.

By including Jake Chessum’s name under the photo and quote from Dr Emanuel, it seemed to some Twitter users that Kayleigh McEnany was implying that Chessum is Joe Biden’s newly appointed covid adviser. Oops!

Dr Emanuel’s quote was posted out of context to Twitter, and as a result has ignited a fire of criticism in his direction.

However, the criticism seems to have been aimed towards photographer Jake Chessum instead, thanks to the unfortunate photo labelling…

Thankfully, some tweeters were able to spot the error.

So, who is Dr Ezekiel Emmanuel?

Dr Ezekiel Emmanuel is an American oncologist, bioethicist, and senior fellow for the Centre for American Progress in Washington D.C.

Currently, he serves as the Vice Provost for Global Initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania and chairs the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy.

He has most recently been appointed to President-elect Joe Biden’s covid task force as one of his advisers.

Dr Emmanuel was born in Chicago and is the older brother of Rahm Emmanuel, the former Mayor of Chicago and President Obama’s Chief of Staff from 2009-2010.
