Following the appearance of Cardi B at the American Music Awards (AMAs) on Sunday, November 20, curiosity into whether the other half of the performance, Glorilla, is her cousin sparked online.
Glorilla and Cardi B took to the American Music Awards stage to perform their single Tomorrow 2, which dropped in September.
While many fans hyped their energetic performance online, some have described the two as cousins – but are they actually related? Let’s take a look…
Are the rap stars actually cousins?
No, the two aren’t actually related but just really close friends. As explained in a 2011 entry on Urban Dictionary, cousin in slang can be used as a term to describe a friend or your bestie. In a list on Slangpedia of different terms for friends, shortened versions of cousin include “cuz” and “cuddy.”
Glorilla, real name Gloria Hallelujah Woods, hails from Memphis, Tennessee, whereas Cardi B’s real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar and she is a New York native.
In an interview with NME, Glorilla reflected on the start of their friendship as she revealed Cardi reached out via DM following the success of her track FNF.
Glorilla explained Cardi messaged her after she relocated to New York and that, over the years, had been sending over projects she had been working on in the hope Cardi would like what she heard.
The rapper opened up about Cardi’s DM further while chatting on My Interviews Are Hotter! With SK Vibemaker, as she added Cardi had sent her a voice message in which she gave Glorilla advice and motivation.
While appearing on The Wunmi Bello Show podcast, Glorilla noted she and Cardi clicked “automatically” as she described the Up rapper as a “beautiful soul.”
Fans thought Glorilla and Cardi B were cousins after AMAs performance
Glorilla was one of the musical acts to grace the American Music Awards stage on Sunday, performing her breakout hit Tomorrow 2.
The tune is a remix of the rapper’s solo track Tomorrow, which was released in July, and features Cardi B. Billboard reports the remix debuted at number three on the Hot R&B and Hip Hop Songs chart, and number nine on the Hot 100.
Fans were delighted when Cardi B surprised audiences at the AMAs to perform her verse on the track onstage.
Amid the excitement, a number of people referred to the artists as cousins. Referencing their AMAs appearance, one Twitter user wrote: “I love when my favorite cousins link up.” Another exclaimed: “My cousins.”
Glorilla has referred to Cardi B as her ‘cousin’
It’s not the first time the pair have been linked as cousins. The up-and-coming rapper has previously described the I Like It hitmaker as such in interviews and on social media.
In an interview with NME last month, Glorilla referred to Cardi B as her cousin while she reflected on how they have grown closer over the past year.
Glorilla also dubbed Cardi her cousin in a recent Twitter exchange:
Truth is, however, they’re just good friends!
