One writes country classics while the other is a pop princess, but yet again people are asking: Is Brandi Carlile related to Belinda Carlisle?
Who is Brandi Carlile
Brandi Carlile is a multiple Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter and producer whose music spans many genres, mainly Americana and alternative country.
Carlile was born and is still living in a small town just outside Seattle Washington. She lives with her partner Catherine Shepherd and and their daughters Evangeline and Elijah, according to Rolling Stone.
In 2005 Carlile released a self-titled album that was later re-released by Columbia, sparking an illustrious career in music. The album peaked at No. 80 on Billboard 200 and reached No. 1 on US Folk Albums.
She has since released a further seven albums and won three Grammys, for best Americana album and both best American roots song and best American roots performance, for The Joke, in 2019.
In her acceptance speech for the awards, Carlile said she came out as lesbian aged 15.
Who is Belinda Carlisle
Another American musician, but of a very different type.
Belinda Carlisle is known for her own pioneering pop sound and for being the lead singer of the Go-Go’s, one of the most successful all-female bands in history.
The 62-year-old married film producer, actor and politician Morgan Mason in 1986 and they have one child, called James, who was born in 1992.
As well as being a well-known musician, Carlisle is also a vocal campaigner for gay rights. Her son James came out as gay aged 14.
The singer said in her 2011 autobiography that Buddhism helps her maintain sobriety after a history of substance abuse.
The Heaven Is a Place on Earth singer told the Guardian in August 2017: “After three decades of cocaine addiction I can’t believe I’m not dead. I should actually look like the Phantom of the Opera with just two holes in the front of my face.”
Is Brandi Carlile related to Belinda Carlisle
So, is Brandi Carlile related to Belinda Carlisle? No, but the confusion refuses to go away.
With Brandi in the news after releasing a new memoir the question has popped up again, but the folk singer revealed in November 2019 that the confusion runs even deeper.
After being named as part of the line-up for Cyndi Lauper’s 9th annual Home for the Holidays charity concert, Brandi tweeted: “I’m on the same lineup as Belinda Carlisle. The confusion will finally end – we are not the same person! So proud to support this cause, thank you @cyndilauper.”
The star’s names are certainly similar, and the fact that they’re both in the music industry doesn’t help to debunk the question either.
Brandi Carlile told Rolling Stone that after her six nominations at the 2018 Grammys, people started to confuse the pair.
She said: “I’m already seeing a lot of pictures of [Go-Gos singer] Belinda Carlisle and plenty of misspellings.
“Me and my wife keep sending them to each other: a picture of Drake, a picture of Kendrick (fellow nominees), and then, boom, a picture of Belinda Carlisle.”
According to Cheat Sheet, the pair “aren’t related in any way,” aside from their musical passion.
