Following the release of the new Elvis biopic, fans of the musician and film star have wondered how old Elvis Presley was in Jailhouse Rock?

Baz Luhrmann’s biopic on the king of rock and roll is here with the new release looking back on Elvis’ music career. 

The film seems to have also prompted interest in Elvis’ movie roles, with some having wondered about the singer’s age in his 1957 film Jailhouse Rock. 

We explore how old Elvis was when Jailhouse Rock was filmed and released.

Jailhouse Rock was filmed and released in the same year

As per the film’s IMDb page, filming for Jailhouse Rock began in May 1957 and ended that June. 

It premiered just four months later in October before its nationwide US release the following month. 

Jailhouse Rock was released in the UK in early 1958 and was later released across Europe in the following months. 

The 1957 film was Elvis Presley’s third film and has been noted as one of the singer’s best films.

How old was Elvis Presley in Jailhouse Rock?

Elvis was born on 8 January 1935, meaning the singer would have been 22 during Jailhouse Rock’s filming and release. 

As his birthday was at the start of the year, he would have already celebrated his 22nd birthday before filming began in May 1957. 

However, by the time the film premiered in London, Elvis would have been 23 years old.

Loving You also came out in 1957

Elvis Presley’s second film, Loving You, also released in 1957, came out a few months before Jailhouse Rock. 

Loving You, which was also Elvis’ first major role, came out that July. Production for Loving You began at the start of 1957, just before filming for Jailhouse Rock. 

Filming for the movie started in January 1957 and ended that March, meaning Elvis had a month’s break between the two projects.

Elvis starred in a total of 31 movies

While he became renowned for his music, Elvis Presley also had success on the big screen, having starred across 31 titles throughout the late 50s and 60s. 

His first film role was in the 1956 film Love Me Tender with the king of rock and roll seen to have gone on to steadily feature in movies across the following decade. 

Over the years, many publications have ranked his films, with some of the top movies including Viva Las Vegas, King Creole and Blue Hawaii. 

Elvis was 34 years old by the time his film career ended as his final film, Change of Habit, was released in 1969
