Evolution of Lady Gaga’s acting career

Gaga’s singing career may have taken off before her acting career, with her breakthrough album The Fame released in 2008. However, she studied acting in college and actually had the dream of being an actor long before singing.

During her Actors On Actors Variety interview with Jake Gyllenhaal, she revealed: “I wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer. And I studied for a really long time. I went to Lee Strasberg. I went to Circle In The Square [theatre school].”

Gaga looks back on first acting gig

It all began when Stefani Germanotta, aka Lady Gaga, landed a guest-starring role on The Sopranos in 2001. The actress had an uncredited role as Girl At Swimming Pool #2 in the ninth episode of season 3 entitled The Telltale Moozadell.

Gaga revealed that after watching the episode back, she knew exactly what she did wrong in her first acting gig. During an interview with EW‘s Awardist podcast, she explained: “When I look back on that scene I can see exactly what I did wrong in that scene. I didn’t know how to listen in a scene! I was supposed to laugh, and it was sort of like, cue, laugh…. I see it and I go, ‘Oh, that’s not a real laugh!'”

The scene Gaga is referencing was taken at a high-school swimming pool with her and two other young girls watching a group of boys swim. Then some children come into the room and announce they have broken into a teacher’s office and start to throw his belongings in the pool.

Gaga proves she’s more than just a singer with these acting credits

Following her first acting gig, she landed roles in Machete Kills, Muppets Most Wanted, and Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.

Lady Gaga also appeared as the Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel. This led Gaga to earn a Golden Globe for best performance by an actress in a mini-series or motion picture made for television. She returned to appear in Roanoke, which was the show’s sixth season.

Gaga landed her first lead role in A Star Is Born

However, her first leading role came in the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born, for which she earned her first Oscar nomination and won an Academy Award for her songwriting in the feature.

Lady Gaga is now widely classed as a professional actor and opened up about method acting for House Of Gucci in her Variety interview.

Gaga revealed she “studied the Stanislavski method” and “worked with Susan Batson, who’s my acting teacher now. I would actually say playing a character for me is like living one long song.”
