Did Emeril Lagasse have a stroke? Fans were worried about the culinary artist’s health after his appearance on the 11th season of MasterChef yesterday, 3 June. Fans thought Lagasse looked different and wondered whether he could be sick. After years out of the public eye, we look into what happened to Lagasse in the meantime and whether fans have anything to worry about.

Who is Emeril Lagasse?

Emeril Lagasse is a 61-year-old American celebrity chef. Originally from Massachusetts, Lagasse took the culinary world by storm in the early 2000s.

At just age seven, Lagasse discovered his love of food, claiming he would beg his mum regularly to teach him how to cook.

During the 2000s, Emeril Lagasse was everywhere on TV. He had cooking shows on Food Network, a sit-com, appeared on travelling shows, wrote his own books and even opened ten restaurants.

During his short-lived time in the spotlight, Lagasse became a much-loved household name, starting up his own product line featuring items such as seasonings, cutlery, sauces and cooking appliances.

What happened to Emeril Lagasse? Stroke, health problems or…money trouble?

With so much success it is surprising Lagasse decided to take a step back. So why did the famous chef turn down the heat on his career? With spiralling questions from fans, we look into where he really went down.

In 2008, it became apparent Lagasse was facing major financial issues after he sold his brand to fellow chef Martha Stewart. For a grand total of $50 million, Stewart took over his best-selling cookbooks, food items, kitchen products, website and all his past television work.

However, regardless of Lagasse making millions he still faced continuing financial difficulties because of a lack of profit from his restaurants. In a 2015 interview with the Week, Lagasse said: “I have nowhere to go, really other than broke… I can’t charge $300 a person in my restaurant or I would not be in business.”

As bills continued to stack up, it was said Lagasse chose to focus on his restaurants rather than TV, explaining why little has been seen of the great chef in recent years.

So, it appears money issues, not health troubles or even a stroke, kept Emeril Lagasse away from TV screens for a while. For those fans worried about Lagasse’s health, that should come as good news.

What is Lagasse doing now?

Since, reappearing in the public eye in Gordon Ramsey’s MasterChef premiere, we’re all now wondering what’s next for the celebrity chef.

With nothing confirmed, it’s hard to say if we’ll be seeing more of Lagasse but if a recent interview with Insider is anything to go by, Lagasse seemed to be right at home being back on the big screen.

He told Insider: “It was a fabulous experience. I had an absolute blast being around Gordon… He has lots of wit about it and how he goes about it, but it is fantastic. I was just so pleased to be a part of it.”
