“He had a real job, his own apartment, a car. He was independent. I didn’t need to take care of him. I thought, ‘God, this is new territory for me – someone wants to be with me just because he likes me.’

John added: “I knew he was the one because he is not afraid of me. He always tells me what he thinks.”

In May 2005, John proposed to Furnish and the couple entered into a civil partnership later that year. Then in 2014, to mark the momentous passing of a law in Britain that finally allowed same-sex couples to obtain full legal marriage status, the couple married for the second time in a private ceremony at their Windsor estate in Berkshire, England.

The two are proud parents of two children, Zachary, 11, and Elijah, 9, and they have never been happier. John and Furnish have credited their long union to great communication and a commitment to always connecting with each other, no matter the distance.

Right from the start, their love was fated.

Elton John met David Furnish in October 1993 at a dinner party thrown by John at his Windsor home. Newly sober after over a decade of substance abuse, John looking to expand his social circle.

“I wanted to meet new people so I rang up a friend in London and said, ‘Could you please rattle some new people together for dinner here Saturday?” John recounted the story to Parade.

Furnish, an advertising executive based in London, was a friend of a friend of John’s. He was reluctant to attend the party, expecting it to be a bore. The evening proved to be anything but, with Furnish returning to John’s home the very next evening for a more intimate take-out dinner.

“We fell in love very quickly,” said John.

In May 2005, John proposed to Furnish 12 years after they first met at an at-home dinner party in front of friends and family. The couple became civil partners in December that same year.

John and Furnish would only legally marry in 2014 at a second ceremony held at the couple’s countryside estate in Berkshire, England. The 74-year old Rocketman hitmaker and the 59-year-old Canadian filmmaker exchanged vows in front of family, including their two sons, and famous friends like David and Victoria Beckham and Ed Sheeran.

Earlier in 2014, during an appearance on the Today show, John explained that he was ecstatic over his big day.

“It will be a joyous occasion and we will have our children there,” he said. “Extraordinary. If you’d looked at my life five years ago and you’d have told me this was going to happen, I’d have said, ‘You’ve put acid in my drink.'”

He continued, “I’m very proud of Britain and the laws that we’ve seen come into existence since we’ve been together. So for this legislation to come through is joyous, and we should celebrate it. We shouldn’t just say, ‘Oh, well, we have a civil partnership. We’re not going to bother getting married.’ We will get married.”

John had been married previously to Renate Blauel in 1984, following a whirlwind romance. Although the marriage only lasted four years.

Adorable tradition they do ‘without fail’

Of married life, John and Furnish communication is key to making a marriage work, which they do through hand-written love notes.

“Every Saturday we gave each other an anniversary card, because we met on a Saturday,” Furnish said in musician 6lack’s 2019 series about love.

“So, we wrote down, in like a little card that you put next to the bed, ‘Happy Anniversary.’ And you write about the week that’s passed and the week that’s coming, and you connect and you tell each other you love each other.”

And John emphasised that the ritual takes place every Saturday “without fail”.

“We go through difficulties as much as anybody else does in a relationship,” he said, “but we sort through it by communication. And one way of communicating is writing down on a piece of paper or a card how you’re feeling.”

John didn’t initially want children but had a change of heart.

“I always said no to having kids, because I’m too old, too set in my ways, too selfish, the lifestyle doesn’t suit me,” John opened up during a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone.

The couple welcomed their first child, son Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, via surrogate in 2010. Their second son, Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John, was born in 2013 with the same surrogate.

Zachary and Elijah are two lucky boys because their godmother is none other than Lady Gaga.

“She’s a great role model,” John has said of the choice, revealing the boys call her “Gaga mother.”
