Jeen-Yuhs’ third instalment, Awakening, arrived on Netflix yesterday (Wednesday, 3 March 2022) – its narrator and co-director, Clarence Simmons Jr (or Coodie for short), has been in the spotlight in recent weeks. Meet Coodie’s daughter Ivy, about whom her father regularly posts on social media.

The most recent of Coodie Rock’s Instagram posts to feature his daughter Ivy was from December 2021, during a trip to see MJ The Musical at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York.
Ivy Simmons graduated from middle school in June last year. Coodie’s post about it has almost 1.3K likes, and shows Ivy in a green gown and mortarboard.

He also posted when she graduated from elementary school, also in New York. That was in 2018, meaning Ivy Simmons is likely 14 or 15 as of March 2022.
Coodie Simmons has three sisters
Coodie was born in Chicago, Illinois, as Clarence Simmons Jr. His parents are Wendy and Clarence (Sr). From a young age, his mother encouraged him to tag alongside his older sister on Tonia’s radio show.

His two younger sisters are Denise and Wendy, whom he has likened to Vanessa and Rudy Huxtable from The Cosby Show. Coodie himself is Theo in the comparison.
From a young age he wanted to be a comedian and made appearances on various comedy shows, including Def Comedy Jam and BET’s Comic View. Coodie lives with Chike, his creative partner, in New York.
How do Coodie Simmons and Kanye West know each other?
While working for public access show Channel Zero and via Chicago’s music scene, Coodie became an early friend of Kanye West.

Inspiration for the project apparently came, at least in part, from Hoop Dreams, which came out in 1994. The documentary follows two African-American inner-city high-school students, William Gates and Arthur Agee, and their dreams of becoming professional basketball players. It is set in Chicago.
He began filming West early on in his career, with a view to making a documentary about his rise to greatness. Jeen-Yuhs is the result, which he co-directed with creative partner Chike.
