What’s the secret to Chrissy Metz’s weight loss? She’s best known for playing Kate in This Is Us, but Chrissy Metz has lost a substantial amount of weight since the beginning of her health journey in 2014. Let’s check in with her now, in 2021.

What are her tips?

Chrissy Metz on playing Kate in This Is Us

On the TV show This Is Us, Kate Pearson (played by Chrissy Metz) struggles with her eating habits and body image and it’s revealed she was teased as a child.

The creator of This Is Us, Dan Fogelman, created the role of Kate based on his sister’s weight loss journey.

In Season One of the show Kate says, “it’s always going to be about weight for [her]” in reference to her insecurities.

When she read the script for the first time, Metz said “these are my fears.” From the get-go, she had a very real connection to the character she would be playing.

In an interview with Vanity Fair from 2017, Chrissy Metz spoke about Kate’s weight loss storyline. She said: “The weight is not all that I am, or all Kate is, but it’s a really big part of who we’ve allowed it to be. And the only way to tell that story is to tell the story.”

This connection with her character goes even deeper. Metz revealed that as part of her contract for the show, she had to lose weight along with her character.

Speaking to TVLine about this, she said: “That was a win-win for me. Because it’s one thing to try to do it on your own. But as human beings, it’s an ego thing: We’re more likely to do something for someone else.”

Chrissy Metz’s weight loss

On her 30th birthday in 2014, Metz had a panic attack that landed her in the ER as she believed she was having a heart attack.

After this, she began to take her health more seriously. She ended up losing more than 100 pounds in less than five months after this incident.

But how did she do it? She said all she did was eat a 2,000-calorie diet and walked for 20 minutes every day.

Although she has been open about her weight loss journey throughout the years, Metz is a strong supporter of body positivity. On this, she said: “I just have to be very clear. Whether or not I lose weight or stay the same, it’s purely a choice of mine for health.

“Not because I think that plus size, curvy, voluptuous, big bodies aren’t attractive – because I think they’re awesome and sexy.”
