Yesterday President Biden paid tribute to Brian Sicknick, the police officer killed in the Capitol siege. While the country mourns for the tragic loss of life, many are wondering about his family, and if Brian Sicknick was married.

Who is Brian Sicknick?

Brian Sicknick was a US Capitol Police officer who died on 7 January from injuries he sustained during the riot on the Capitol Building.

The New York Times had initially reported that he was struck with a fire extinguisher in the altercation, but later revised that report. An investigation into officer Sicknick’s exact cause of death is still ongoing.

His family released this statement at the time:

‘There really aren’t enough kind words in any language to describe how sweet Brian was. He was truly a lovely, humble soul. We are missing him terribly.”

Sicknick was born and raised in South River, New Jersey and joined the National Guard after high school in 1997. During this time he was deployed to Saudi Arabia and Kyrgyzstan.

He was 42-years-old and had been a part of the Capitol Police since 2008, with his family sharing that he had alway wanted to be a police officer.

The ceremony for Officer Sicknick was held at Arlington National Cemetery on 2 February. He was cremated and his urn was carried up the steps of the Capitol alongside a US flag.

Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have released a statement saying that:

“His sacrifice reminds us every day of our obligation to our country and to the people we serve.”

Was Brian Sicknick married?

Although Brian Sicknick was not married, he did have a long term partner and girlfriend called Sandra Garza. The pair had been together for 11 years.

The family are choosing to remain private during their period of mourning but they have released a statement regarding Officer Brian Sicknick’s burial:

“The family of U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick thanks the Congressional leadership for bestowing this historic honour on our fallen American hero. We also wish to express our appreciation to the millions of people who have offered their support and sympathies during this difficult time. Knowing our personal tragedy and loss is shared by our nation brings hope for healing.”
