Who is retired US politician Bob Dole’s wife? Dole, 97, has announced he was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer and will begin treatment on Monday, 22 February. Dole’s wife of 45 years, Elizabeth, is by his side as he fights this illness.
Who is Bob Dole’s wife, Elizabeth?
Bob Dole’s wife, Elizabeth (née Mary Elizabeth Alexander Hanford) is the US politician’s second wife. His first wife was Phyliss Holden, whom he was married to from 1948, until their divorce in 1972.
Elizabeth Dole is well known in her own right, as an American politician who served under 3 presidential administrations. She was born on 29 July 1936, making her 84 years old at the time of writing.
She was born in Salisbury, North Carolina and later in life, gained her education at Duke University, from where she graduated with a degree in political science. She went on to do a post-graduate course at Oxford and later attended Harvard Law School, where she earned her Master’s and Juris Doctor.
Before becoming Bob Dole’s wife, Elizabeth – then Hanford – first began working in politics during the 1960s, after a career in teaching. She worked under the administrations of Presidents Nixon, Reagan and Bush, and, in 2003, was appointed US Senator, a role she held for 6 years until 2009.
She is also well known for her charity work with The Red Cross and has published a number of titles, including The Doles Unlimited partners (1988) and Hearts Touched By Fire: My 500 Most Inspirational Quotes (2004).
Though she has no children of her own she is step-mother to Bob’s daughter, Robin, from his first marriage.
How did Bob and Elizabeth Dole meet?
Bob Dole met his future wife through Elizabeth’s boss back in 1972, though this is not when they started dating. Later, when Dole saw her after a convention, he decided to call her on the phone. Apparently, after a number of tries, she said yes to going on a date with him. Perhaps her reluctance might have had something to do with the age gap between then – Bob is 13 years older than his wife.
The couple married in 1975 and have been together ever since.
