Ben Stiller met the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, on World Refugee Day and the internet can’t get over their similar short stature.
Ben Stiller has served as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) since 2016. The actor reported for duty this week as he visited those affected by the Russian war.
The actor met up with President Zelensky, calling him “my hero”. He praised the leader for “what you’ve done in this country and for the world”.
Despite the important issue at hand, the internet seems more consumed with the heights of the two famous faces, and how similar they are.
Millions displaced since February 2022
The BBC cites the UN in its report that more than 13 million people have fled their homes in Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February 2022.
Russia itself harbours the most Ukrainian refugees at 1.3 million as of 21 June. Poland ranks second at 1.18 million, while Romania and Moldova have seen fewer than 100,000 refugees.
Stiller has met refugees and asylum seekers from Syria, Afghanistan and Central America among others since assuming his post as UNHCR ambassador.
In a statement to mark World Refugee Day, the Night At The Museum actor said: “I’m here meeting people forced to flee their homes due to the war in Ukraine.
“In so many parts of the world, war and violence devastate people and leave lasting traumatic effects. Wherever and whenever it happens, nobody chooses to flee their home.
“Seeking safety is a right – and it needs to be upheld for every person.”
Ben Stiller and President Zelensky take centre stage
The world’s media was present at Stiller and Zelensky’s meeting but the internet is poking fun at the photos given the duo’s short stature. One Twitter user laughed that, together, they’d still be shorter than the male average height, which is 5ft 9in in the US.
Another fan joked: “I’m starting to think they got Ben Stiller to go to Ukraine because he’s exactly same height as Zelensky.”
What Ben Stiller lacks in height, he makes up in talent
The Zoolander is among the shortest actors in Hollywood at 5ft 6in (1.67m), according to Celeb Heights. His less than average height hasn’t been obvious throughout his career, however, perhaps due to tactical filming angles.
In Meet The Fockers, Stiller frequently filmed alongside on-screen father Dustin Hoffman, who is one inch shorter at 5ft 5in, so it was never noticeable.
Robert De Niro, who portrays his father-in-law in the franchise, has been reported to stand at 5ft 9in but, judging from the film, he looks more like 5ft 7.5in to us.
The inspirational Ukrainian leader is reportedly 5ft 7in, which is less than his nation’s 5ft 10in male average. The photo above, however, seems to show Stiller at the same height. Perhaps it’s another trick of the camera angle?
