Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle related? Amid news of Prince Philip’s death today, 9 April, some people have started looking into the royal family tree. And lo and behold – the more eagle-eyed armchair investigators think they’ve discovered a family link – beyond marriage – that might mean Harry and Meghan are related.
Are Harry and Meghan related?
Yes, in a way. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly related – they seem to be very distant cousins, according to a genealogical investigation by The Mail on Sunday in 2017.
In their investigation, the publication found that the royal couple share linage through a late 15th-century ancestor of the Queen Mother.
Meghan Markle is said to be related to the Royal Family through Ralph Bowes, a High Sheriff of County Durham who is the former actress’s ancestor from 15 generations ago.
Prince Harry also shares a connection with Ralph Bowes through his great-grandson Sir George Bowes MP.
Other reports have suggested Harry and Meghan may also be related through other ancestors.
In a separate article by The Sun, which looked at research by Ancestry, the couple allegedly share a connection through King Henry VIII’s third wife, Jane Seymour.
The research also noted Meghan’s connection to medieval King Edward III.
The Royal Family Tree: Was Prince Philip the Queen’s cousin?
Harry and Meghan are not the only royal couple to share an ancestral relation.
Prince William and Kate Middleton – like Harry and Meghan – are also said to be distant cousins.
Queen Elizabeth II and the late Prince Philip were also related through a number of different ancestors.
Their most notable link was through Queen Victoria, as both Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were her great-great-grandchildren.
Amid the news of Prince Philip’s death, Twitter users have started sharing their reactions to these surprising family connections.
