Is Mehrsa Baradaran a Mormon? The banking law professor is currently in the spotlight as she has been named as a member of Joe Biden’s presidential transition team.
Here’s everything you need to know about her.
Is Mehrsa Baradaran a Mormon?
In short, yes, Mehrsa Baradaran is a Mormon. However, the story isn’t quite as simple as that.
Baradaran grew up in Iran and moved to America with her family in 1986, when she was 9 years old. She remembers being concerned about whether they would be allowed in America as they were coming from a Muslim country at a time when US culture was rife with anti-Iranian sentiment.
In her essay for Slate, she said: “I understand that America took a risk on us.”
The Baradaran family joined the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) shortly after arriving in Los Angeles.
In an interview with Deseret News, Baradaran said: “For us, the church was America. When we came to America as refugees, in 1986, the very first people who embraced us were Latter-day Saints who were open-minded and open-hearted. We were from a terrorist country then, but the church didn’t care.”
When they moved to Las Vegas the following year and had nothing, fellow church members showed up to offer them furniture and everything else they would need.
Who is Mehrsa Baradaran?
Mehrsa Baradaran is a law professor, specialising in banking law. She currently teaches at the University of California, Irvine.
She earned her bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and her law degree from New York University.
The books’ premise is the view that America has two banking systems – one serving the rich, and one exploiting everyone else. The solution that Baradaran proposes is postal banking as a way forward for a new American banking system. This view has, in the past, been supported by US Senator Elizabeth Warren as well.
In 2017 Baradaran’s second book, The Colour Of Money: Black Banks And The Racial Wealth Gap, was published. Netflix stated they were inspired by this book to commit $100 million to support black communities.
Baradaran hired to Joe Biden’s transition team
Yesterday, it was announced that Mehrsa Baradaran will be a member of Joe Biden’s presidential transition team.
Transition teams, as the name suggests, are put in place to help a new president move into the role and enable them to govern well.
In her role, Baradaran will support the presidential transition in areas relating to the United States Department of Treasury and the Federal Reserve.
