Is Sen Rand Paul a doctor? The Kentucky senator’s exchange with Dr Fauci over whether or not vaccine recipients should continue to wear masks has prompted questions about Rand Paul’s medical career and qualifications.

Is Rand Paul a medical doctor?

Randal Howard Paul, incumbent US senator for the state of Kentucky, is a graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine.

He started practising ophthalmology – a branch of medicine dealing with diseases of the eye and visual system – in 1993, in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Withdrawal from the Board, and ‘an eye doctors’ rebellion’

10 years later, Senator Paul withdrew form the American Board of Ophthalmology.

The Washington Post reported in 2015 that he was outraged by a new rule that required younger doctors to take a test the older doctors did not have to take.

As a result he “tried to lead an eye doctors’ rebellion” and founded his own Board of Ophthalmology.

Senator Rand Paul established his own medical practice in 2007, and entered politics three years after that.

So, what happened to Rand Paul’s medical career?

Senator Rand Paul’s governmental profile mentions the fact that he is a “Dr” 23 times in less than 500 words.

It also states that he completed a general surgery internship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

Moreover, in his free time, Dr Paul “performs pro-bono eye surgeries for patients across Kentucky”, and has travelled to Haiti and Guatemala on medical missions with the University of Utah’s eye centre.

Not for the first time

However, this is not the first time publications have asked whether or not Rand Paul is a doctor.

In 2010, in an article since removed, Fox News wrote that Sen. Paul’s medical credentials had been called into question.

Nor is this the first time that Dr Fauci and Rand Paul have disagreed on covid-19 policy and epidemiology. MSNBC counts precisely four times.

Forbes wrote in September 2020 that Fauci had disapproved of Sen. Paul’s comments about herd immunity.

For his part, Rand Paul’s @DrRandPaul Twitter bio states that he “fight[s] for the Constitution, individual liberty and the freedoms that make this country great”.
