As his cabinet continues to expand, Joe Biden has just announced that his choice for transport secretary is former rival for the presidency Pete Buttigieg. This would make him the first openly gay cabinet member in US history. Let’s meet Buttigieg’s husband, Chasten Glezman.

Who is Pete Buttigieg?

Pete Buttigieg was born on 19 January 1982 and is the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, having been elected to the position in 2012.

Buttigieg obtained his BA in history and literature at Harvard University and then attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar studying philosophy, politics and economics.

This year, Buttigieg ran for the Democratic presidential nomination but left the running in March and endorsed Biden.

Joe Biden said that Buttigieg is a “barrier-breaking public servant from the industrial Midwest with a track record of trailblazing, forward-thinking executive leadership.”

Before embarking on a political career, Buttigieg was a US Navy Reserve intelligence officer. He was also a civilian contractor for McKinsey & Company.

He said about living openly as a gay man: “After coming home safe from Afghanistan, I realised that every day is a gift— and that it made no sense to remain so trapped by expectations that I might go to my grave with no idea what it was like to be in love.”
