Kinzinger’s official website put out a press release titled “It’s officially official!” on 18 February, while the congressman himself wrote on Twitter:

Why are Adam Kinzinger and his wife trending now?

A slate of Adam Kinzinger’s relatives have publicly shunned the GOP Rep. for his stance on former president Donald Trump.

The Illinois Republican broke his allegiance to Trump and voted for his impeachment following the events of 6 January.

As a result, eleven of his relatives signed a two-page, handwritten letter calling him a “disappointment” to the family, “and to God”.

The family sent the letter to the New York Times, which published it online two days ago.

Despite the siege launched against her husband by so many of his family members, Adam Kinzinger’s wife Sofia has stood by him.

On 14 January, immediately after the vote to impeach Donald Trump took place, Sofia took to Twitter to describe his decision as “a selfless act of courage”.

She wrote that it “reflects your determination & commitment to serve with integrity. I will never forget this day- I’m proud of you!”

Other reactions from Twitter

Twitter commentators have expressed support for Adam Kinzinger’s “lonely mission”.

One user shared her experience of being told that she had “disgraced the family by saying something nice about Obama on TV”.

Meanwhile, another wrote of the commonality of being “disowned, cut off and disparaged”.

However, on the other side of the fence, there are those who have admitted to “disowning and cutting off” staunch Trump supporters.
