Calico Hair is all over TikTok, and it’s inspired by a type of cat

If you’re looking for a new hairstyle this fall, what about calico? It’s all over TikTok right now and the style is inspired by a type of cat.

Who knew the calico cat, a domestic breed that originated from Egypt, would inspire the latest big hair trend? It’s certainly a little out there.

What is Calico Hair?

Calico hair involves coloring different sections of your hair in three different colors: black/brown, blonde and copper/red. The domestic cat breed is tri-color with patches of white, orange and black, hence the name of the hairstyle.

It first arose on TikTok earlier this year but is back for fall, and it can look really cool if it’s done right. Rather than having one big block red, another blonde and the rest black, most choose to do smaller highlights of each to create a more subtle look.

The bold style certainly isn’t for everyone, but it’s perfect if you are looking for something a little more unconventional. Plus, the colors just scream fall and Halloween, so it’s a great time of year to take the plunge.

It takes us back to the 2000s when chunky highlights were all the rage – but with a little Gen Z twist. Think Kelly Clarkson, Lindsay Lohan and Atomic Kitten. Chunky highlights were the fashion back then, and it looks like they’re coming back.

For men, the warrior cut is taking over TikTok right now, a new fluffy hairstyle that all the girls are swooning over.

‘Fun and creative look’

We spoke to celebrity hairstylist William Whatley, who told The Focus the trend isn’t likely to stick around for long, but it’s definitely a “fun and creative look” for hairdressers to create.

“The calico hair color trend is a very fast fleeting fall trend of combining, blondes, red, browns and coppers into one hairstyle,” he said. “This is a fast-rising trend, especially on TikTok for the youth.”

When doing the style, he prefers to stay within a very close range of colors so that everything blends nicely and the result isn’t so stark.

“That way its still a pretty color following in the same levels, hue and chroma so that it looks very pretty versus doing a stark blonde, a stark red and a stark brown,” he continued.

However, the great thing about this look is it’s totally customizable to you. You can decide how much of each shade you want and where you want it placed, so it’s entirely unique.

Will you try it this fall?
