Signs that Twilight was written by a Mormon, according to a former Mormon

Former Mormon Alyssa Grenfell has once again spoken out about her former church, this time on the topic of Twilight and how it bears several religious themes.

Former Mormon Alyssa Grenfell (@alyssadgrenfell) is a TikTok authority on the Mormon Church after she quit the religion and God altogether for a whole host of reasons. She now dedicates her time to a flourishing community of 232k followers where she posts videos about topics like Mormon slang.

Twilight author Stephenie Meyer is a Mormon

Twilight, a book franchise that soon became a dominating force in pop culture in the mid-2000s, is about a human girl falling for a vampire. A lot happens throughout, including run-ins with culturally insensitive werewolves, sitting in a window for seven months, and the combination of two names that have no business being together. We’re looking at you, Renesmee.

Though Twilight continues to be hugely popular in 2024, with a new animated show soon on the way, fans often find themselves looking back at the franchise in a humorous light. In retrospect, it was not the vampire Love Actually we all thought it was.

Alyssa, who earlier this month claimed the Mormon Church turns women into Tradwives, hopped on the trend on Tuesday, earning just over 70k likes.

“A basic premise of the book is saving yourself for marriage, and obviously fans had to wait quite a long time for that wedding scene,” she said, identifying the first sign of its Mormon roots. “Abstinence is a huge aspect of Mormon belief, so it’s no surprise that Bella [Swan] got pregnant basically immediately after getting married.”

Alyssa also said that there is no drinking or smoking in the book, something the Mormon church forbids and author Stephenie Meyer removes from all her books. The same could also be said of swearing.

The former Mormon continued to explain that Bella and Edward Cullen’s caution against touching and kissing is another theme drawn from Mormonism. She said they knew “passions would be ignited” if they touched and they might “go too far.”

“This is very similar to Mormon dating, and I was literally told that if I’m dating someone, you should only kiss them in the way that you would feel comfortable kissing them in front of your parents or Jesus Christ himself,” Alyssa added.

The vampire flick is still a highly contentious topic

If Alyssa’s comment section was a true reflection of the world, then it would seem that Twilight is still a divisive topic in 2024. Thankfully, we seem to be passed the Edward vs Jacob argument.

One person said: “If you ever decide to make an entire long-form video about this on your YouTube Id be on the edge of my seat. Ive been so invested in the Mormon undertones and influence of Twilight.”

“When Bella is downing cokes for energy instead of coffee,” another person pointed out, while a third said, “I just watched this with my daughter few days ago and thought of this. I love the stories! But wish she didnt have Bella get married and pregnant so young!”

Someone else said: “This makes so much more sense. I never understood the characters.”
