The best US States to retire in from warm weather and beaches to nightclub hotspot

A new survey has crowned Florida as the retirement capital of the United States, which coincidentally, is also the State with the best education system.

Though most Americans are more fearful of retirement than death, it’s an eventuality that will one day reach us all. Of course, everything from vegan diets to specific exercises can extend your life and keep you working, but wouldn’t you prefer to sun it up with a cocktail in hand?

For years, there has been a running joke in both pop culture and the real world that Florida is the retirement capital of the US. As it turns out, that joke was factually correct.

With sunny beaches, exotic wildlife, and food that will make your mouth water, it’s no surprise that Orlando, Florida, was crowned in a new survey from WalletHub.

Its important to choose wisely when picking where to retire, as many retirees are on a fixed income, notes Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst. As a result, the best cities for retired people are those that minimize taxes and expenses, as well as have good opportunities for retirees to continue paid work for extra income, if they choose to do so.

Retirees flock to Orlando for a number of reasons, though none are more alluring than its lack of income tax, estate tax, or inheritance tax. Nonetheless, Orlando ranked the highest in terms of affordability, safety, and quality of life.

Orlando was followed close behind by Miami, which carries the same tax laws with the added extra of a flourishing nightlife. Though not particularly important to most elderly people, you’re never too old to party.

The third-best city was surprisingly Minneapolis, Minnesota, where retirees are swapping the sunny weather for greater continued work opportunities and a flourishing healthcare system.

The top ten are as follows:

  • Orlando, FL
  • Miami, FL
  • Minneapolis, MN
  • Tampa, FL
  • Fort Lauderdale, FL
  • Scottsdale, AZ
  • Cincinnati, OH
  • St. Petersburg, FL
  • Casper, WY
  • Atlanta, GA

Though numerous cities in Florida topped the official top ten list, California featured heavily with the least popular cities for retirement.

At the very bottom was San Bernardino, which has a higher cost of living, subpar healthcare, and recreational activities not popular with elderly people. The same could also be said for Stockton, Rancho Cucamonga, and Bakersfield, all of which bottomed the list.

The worst cities for old people include:

  • Fontana, CA
  • Wichita, KS
  • Bridgeport, CT
  • Fresno, CA
  • Detroit, MI
  • Newark, NJ
  • Bakersfield, CA
