The 10 most popular tattoos right now might sway your next ink choice
When deciding what tattoo to get next, you might want to take the most popular designs into consideration.
Some inks are far more common than others, and it’s best to avoid one of the biggest tattoo trends if you want something a little more unique.

10 most popular tattoos right now
Artists at LLTattoo analyzed Google search data to find the most commonly-searched tattoo designs, unveiling which symbols are the most popular globally.
The top 10 inks by average global monthly search volume are:
- Butterfly – 428,733
- Rose – 294,725
- Tribal – 259,533
- Dragon – 257,367
- Flower – 249,000
- Cross – 210,300
- Medusa – 203,341
- Lion – 176,400
- Snake – 176,083
- Wolf – 163,467
Butterfly tattoo tops the list
Experts found that the butterfly tattoo is the most-searched design, with a staggering 45% more searches than any other.
The winged insect often represents transformation and personal growth, stemming from how it starts as a caterpillar and turns into a beautiful butterfly. It can also be a symbol of resilience, hope and a reminder of overcoming past struggles.
Next on the list is rose tattoos, which are typically associated with love and romance. They are one of the most popular flowers and people often get them tattooed as an association to their own or a loved one’s name, like Rose, Rosie or Primrose.
Both of those are more typically female designs, but the next two most popular are more male-dominated. Tribal tattoos have long histories with tribes from across the world, while dragons are usually mythical or linked to Chinese culture.

Flower tattoos refer to any floral design that isn’t a rose, and the only religious design on the list is the cross which has roots in Christianity. Medusa, which comes from Greek mythology, is often associated with strength and power.
The last three in the top 10 are all animals, lion, snake and wolf. Lions have long symbolized bravery, leadership, and power, snakes represent transformation and rebirth, while the wolf is a symbol of power, loyalty and courage.
Don’t commit too quickly
People are sometimes quick to get a tattoo just because they like the design, but it’s important not to rush into the decision and understand what the symbol actually means first.
“Often customers are quick to commit to tattoos with little thought to their, potentially hidden, meanings,” tattoo artist Mentor Dedaj said. “We would always recommend a little research into the meaning of your tattoos before theyre on your skin for good.”
You might want to consider which tattoo locations are most painful too. Some areas of the body hurt a lot more than others!
