Where is Twitter Blue available? Android and web subscriptions lag
After some trouble at the weekend Twitter Blue has finally arrived but the subscription appears to be lagging when it comes to web and Android.
Huge changes have been made throughout the company following Elon Musk’s monumental takeover of the social media platform, one notable addition being the launch of a verification subscription service.
After only two weeks at the helm of the company, Musk has positioned paid account verification as a way to make Twitter sustainable and increase trust in the platform.
What is Twitter Blue?
According to the media platform, Twitter Blue is a “premium subscription service that elevates quality conversations on Twitter.” But what does that mean?
Basically, Twitter Blue gives the subscriber the prestigious blue check next to their name and handle, which means it’s a verified account.
Previously the blue check was only available for specific accounts independently verified by Twitter. Verification was based on certain requirements to indicate “active, notable and authentic accounts of public interest.”
Now anyone can become verified easily but only if they subscribe to Twitter Blue.
When will it be available?
The new verification service will set users back $7.99 in the US (6.99 in the UK) and is available now. Once people subscribe they will be able to view ad-free articles.
Other features include being able to bookmark folders, change the color theme of a user’s profile, undo tweets, choose custom app icons, choose custom navigation and change the way users see top articles.
Although users won’t be able to change their display name after receiving a blue check mark and subscribing with Twitter Blue, Twitter promises to implement a “new process soon for any naming changes.”
However, some of these features are only available on certain platforms and in certain countries.
Where is Twitter Blue available?
If you switched your app on today and saw Twitter Blue as an option but, when you clicked on it, you saw an error message “We’re working to make Twitter Blue available in your country in the future, please check back later” you’re in a country where the subscription service has yet to be rolled out.
However, if you’re in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or the UK, you should be able to sign up for it now.
Many people have taken to Twitter to bemoan the fact the service is currently unavailable to them:
Others claim they’ve struggled to subscribe to Twitter even though they live in the US:
Twitter Blue for Android
As well as only being available in certain countries, some of the features are only available on iOS. According to Twitter, the verification subscription isn’t available on Android devices yet or for those using the platform on the web.
You should already be able to access some of the features on Android and the web such as bookmarking folders, undoing tweets, customising navigation and changing your top articles but actually subscribing to the service is only available to iOS users.
The roll-out of the app has had a few teething problems since it dropped as some people were getting Twitter Blue verified accounts when they were impersonating already existing verified accounts such as Donald Trump and even Twitter owner Musk.
However, Twitter quickly stamped down on impersonators, IGN reports.
How to get a subscription
Getting a Twitter Blue subscription should be relatively simple for someone with an iOS device:
- Navigate to the Profile menu on your app or at twitter.com
- Select Twitter Blue
- Select the blue ‘Subscribe for $/year’ button
- Follow the in-app purchase instructions for iOS
