5 behaviors could point to someone having multiple personality disorder, says Psychiatrist

Psychiatrist Doctor Judith Joseph has outlined five of the signs that could point to you having multiple personality disorder, which is also known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).

The world of mental health is an expansive one filled to the brim with disorders and illnesses that you’ve probably never heard of. Outside of depression and anxiety, you have narcissism, which is said to decrease with age, PTSD, Psychopathy, Schizophrenia, and antisocial personality disorder to name but a few.

What is multiple personality disorder?

Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) is a rare illness that only affects around 1.5% of the global population. It is often misdiagnosed and can require numerous assessments before a diagnosis is settled.

Typically, those living with MPD have two or more “personality states” or alters, which is a term used to describe the other personalities contained in one body. Each of these identities can have differing histories, names, and behaviors from the primary personality.

It is most common in people who have experienced horrific childhood trauma, whereby “personality states” were created as a form of protection. Therapy options usually include Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

DID is very confusing for those experiencing it. Because memory is impaired, mental health professionals often miss the diagnosis and often feel that symptoms are related to schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. DID is often tied to severe childhood trauma. #dissociativeidentitydisorder

The ‘signs’ you might have MPD

Doctor Judith Joseph (@drjudithjoseph) is a medical professional with years of experience, everything she says should be taken with a pinch of salt. A TikTok video can not diagnose you with Dissociative identity disorder, only a doctor can.

Posting a video for her 365k followers on TikTok, the doctor highlighted how waking up in an unknown place could point to MPD. The idea is that an alter took you to that place, meaning you have no memory of it.

Judith continued to suggest that unknown purchases and random receipts could point to multiple personalities, but that doesn’t mean you can blame your fourth purchase of the Stanley X Starbucks collab on mental health.

If you’re hearing voices in your head, then this could also be a sign of MPD. Coincidentally, it’s also a symptom of schizophrenia, which is why multiple personality disorder is often misdiagnosed.

Last, and perhaps the most important of Dr Judith’s points, was having scars where you can’t remember injuring yourself.
