iPhone calculator gets a ‘major glow up’ with Apple’s new iOS 18
Apple has just unveiled its latest operating system, iOS 18, and it’s one of its biggest updates ever, with changes to all sorts of features – even the calculator!
The new update will be released for everyone in September, but some have gained early access, and mathematicians will be obsessed with the calculator’s upgrade.

iPhone calculator gets a ‘glow up’
TikTok user Gregs Gadgets has showed off the new calculator, revealing the app is more advanced than ever before.
“The calculator app in iOS 18 just got a major glow up,” he said before taking everyone inside the improved version.
There’s a new button in the bottom-left of the screen that lets you switch between a Basic calculator, Scientific and something new called Math Notes. The “mind-blowing” feature is an entire notebook where you can write and draw equations using a pen.

It automatically figures out the answers and even writes the solution in the same handwriting you wrote the equation in. So clever!
This works for really complex equations, diagrams and drawings too, and the Math Notes section is entirely customizable. You can switch the background from light to dark, move between lines and grids and even upload pictures and audio recordings.
Another clever addition is a History section which helps you keep track of previous calculations, and there’s a new unit conversion feature to help users quickly convert length, weight, currencies, and more.
The app is now a “full-blown math notebook”! Take a look:

With iOS 18, the calculator app is available on iPad too. Ever since the tablet was released in 2010, users haven’t been able to access the calculator, so this is a huge moment.
It’s exactly the same as on the iPhone, with all the new features including Math Notes, and the app will support Apple Pencil too.
“An all-new Math Notes calculator allows users to type or write out mathematical expressions and see them instantly solved in their own handwriting,” Apple said. “They can also assign values to variables when learning new concepts in class, calculating a budget, and more.”
On top of that, there’s a new graphing feature which lets users write or type an equation and insert a graph with just one tap, and you can also add multiple equations on the same graph to see how they relate.
Math Notes are automatically accessible in the Notes app too in the new Math Notes folder, making them really easy to find and send.
When using Apple Pencil on an iPad, the new Smart Script feature will also make your handwritten notes neater and easier to read, while still maintaining the look and feel of your personal handwriting.
If you can’t wait until the fall, you can download the iOS 18 Beta by signing up to the Apple Developer Program, but it will cost you $99/75 and the new operating system is likely to contain lots of bugs and glitches and it is still in the testing phase.
