London Fashion Week 2020: Burberry live show sound glitch explained

Today marks the start of London Fashion Week, with the Burberry opening show kicking off the mostly digital festivities. However, it appears the Burberry live show had a sound glitch as creators and fans alike get used to the new, online format. Or was it all part of the concept? Let’s find out.

Switch to Twitch

For todays SS21 Burberry collection display, chief creative officer Riccardo Tisci decided to useTwitchfor a fully immersive experience, which included a guest chat and a live short film.

The pre-show discussion, featuring guests including Bella Hadid, together with sneak peeks posted on Instagram in the days leading up to the show, built up anticipation for the main event.

The alleged Burberry live show sound glitch

As an avid fashion enthusiast, I was ready and waiting at 1pm to tune into the show from theLondon Fashion Week website link. To my disappointment, however, nothing appeared at the turn of the hour. I refreshed the screen thinking my laptop was frozen, but after several attempts, still nothing.I tried the link to YouTube but there was no live event at all.

Running five minutes late, similar to a typical fashion week show, I decided to head to Instagram. A notification said the show was live. Along with 3000 other viewers, I watched in anticipation as a model in a mirrored box got herself ready for the show.

As she stepped out into the surrounding woodland, I noticed something was missing the sound.

A fire in the comments

As the show continued, models emerged silently from the woodland, wearing beautiful neutral silhouettes with occasional pops of bright orange. Surely I was the only one experiencing this deafening silence, I thought to myself.

But, as I furiously tampered with my volume to double-check whether I could listen to the live band and not just see them, I realised I was not alone in my confusion.

Among the usual “beautiful clothes” comments, there were complaints about the music, or lack thereof. Tens of messages all reading the same thing: Where is the sound?

Before long, viewers were dropping out. London Fashion Week’s opening show, by Burberry no less, was quickly losing fans all in all, 600 by the end of the stream.

Was it part of the concept?

Despite the lack of sound throughout Burberry’s 30-minute opening show, I am glad I persevered. The collection made all the noise it needed with its striking colour contrasts and stunning sequin dresses emerging from the richly green forest undergrowth.

One viewer’s comment struck me in particular: what if this is an abstract show, and we can each imagine our own soundtrack?

Was the apparent sound glitch part of Burberry’s live show?

Burberry undoubtedly made waves with their opening show technical glitch, whether intentional or not. It is yet to be confirmed one way or the other, but I, for one, think the clothes and the visually striking artistic performance spoke volumes for the essence of Burberry itself.
