Nutritionist has her say on ‘sea moss trend’ as woman nearly throws up on TikTok

A nutritionist hit back at the rising trend of health supplements after a fellow social media user literally gagged on sea moss gel.

Though supplements have been around for decades, their prevalence on social media apps like Instagram has only skyrocketed their popularity in recent years. Though many come with their own inherent health benefits, said enhancements can also be acquired through a typically healthy diet.

The nutritionist was not a fan of sea moss supplements

Marianna Moore (@mariannas_pantry), who has a master’s degree in nutritional biology, hit back at the rise of supplements in a PSA addressed to her 660k followers.

Stitching a TikTok video of a woman gagging over sea moss, Marianna said: “No supplement, sea moss included, is going to have that big of an effect on your overall health that makes that reaction worth it.”

Sea moss has grown in popularity largely due to it possessing 92 of the 102 minerals and nutrients essential to the human body. In a medically reviewed article for Web MD, Dr. Jabeen Begum outlined a few of the supposed benefits including protecting the immune system and removing mucus from the lungs.

Marianna continued to outline how a healthy whole-food diet, enough sleep, and regular exercise are the basis of any healthy life.

“Supplements are just that, they are supplemental to your diet. They should be filling gaps in your diet that you aren’t getting from food,” she said. “Maybe you’re deficient in some of your minerals. It is completely unnecessary to take something you despise so much.”

The internet is totally over supplements

Though business is clearly booming, having reached $40.9 billion in 2023, Marianna’s fellow social media users doubled down on her comments.

One person quipped: “I wish you could see my cabinet FULL of supplements to get through Menopause hell and weight gain. Sea moss is my newest. Thank you for this.”

“I wish I could enjoy protein powder. They are all so overwhelming to me. Idk how people mix it with water or whatever. It makes me gag,” someone else said.

Use this information to experiment and decide for yourself what type of sea moss you prefer. I’m using organic irish moss (chondrus crispus). Wild-crafted & hand picked by 5th generation seaweed farmers. #seamoss #plantbased #preworkworkout #thyroid #foryou

But there were some who fought the corner of sea moss, as one person detailed: “I have to say the only thing that helped me with my chronic fatigue was sea moss but you should buy good quality sea moss& make gel at home.”

Another follower added: “My Seamoss gel does not look like that at all and it has 0 taste and I take it every morning just fine. Its like flavorless Jello and its helped my skin so much.”
