TikTok’s ‘Invisible String Theory’ says we’re linked to our soulmates from birth
People on TikTok are obsessed with theories that delve deep into our romantic relationships, and one of the most popular is the ‘Invisible String’.
The theory stems from Chinese mythology and says we’re all connected to our soulmates in crazy ways – you just might not know it yet.

What is the ‘Invisible String Theory’?
The theory uses a piece of invisible string as an analogy to explain how the universe connects people who are destined to meet. It says two lovers are bound together using a piece of invisible string which can stretch anywhere across the world.
Those people are brought together at various times in their lives, but they don’t know that until they eventually meet. For example, you might find out you and your significant other went to the same school or were once on vacation in the same place at the same time.
The universe keeps soulmates apart until the timing is right, at which point they are brought together and will discover they were connected the entire time. Sometimes, the connections can go as far back as birth, like being born in the same hospital.
It comes from Chinese mythology
It comes from an East Asian beliefcalled the “Red Thread of Fate,” which says a piece ofred string ties you to your true love. According to Chinese mythology, this cord can stretch and tangle, but never break, and it will lead you to your soulmate.
It’s been part of China’s culture for centuries and legend says the god of marriage and love Yue Xia Lao Ren is in charge of this magic red string. In China, the color red symbolises happiness and is commonly featured at weddings.
Original Chinese folklore says this string is tied around both people’s ankles, although it’s more commonly said to be tied to everyone’s little finger. Japanese culture says it is bound from a male’s thumb to a female’s little finger.
