The biggest tattoo trends of 2024, as recommended by artists
Artists have spoke to The Focus about the incoming tattoo design trends of 2024.
Like every other area of personal style, whats in fashion changes between the seasons, years, and decades. Tattoos are no different.

Don’t get stuck in the tattoo trends of 2023
With each passing year, tattoos we have permanently etched on our bodies go out of style and act as would-be indicators of our age. In order to correctly predict the coming trends, we must first look back at the popular styles of Yesteryear.
Neo tribal made a bit of a scene in the tattoo community, Amie Boyce, a tattoo artist at Brass House Tattoos, told us. Butterflies in neo-tribal style and hearts too.
Neo tribal is a term used to describe a style of tattoo drawing inspiration from ancient cultural symbols. These are usually blended with modern interpretation and with a personal creative flare. But before you book an appointment to get another cultures symbols on your skin, Amie argued that she doesnt expect this trend to last long in 2024.
Amie also said that tramp stamps made a triumphant, if not controversial, comeback in 2023. The lower back tattoo was all the rage in the early 2000s, becoming synonymous with trashy culture.
Gen Z has reclaimed the term as of late, turning it into a mark of honor. They are also gaining traction on social media apps like Instagram, TikTok and Twitter.
Notable animals of the year include panthers and butterflies, though our resident tattoo artist noted how butterflies have always been in style. Its reasonable to assume they will also feature in the must-have tatts of 2024.
Amie also emphasized that sentimental tattoos were in high demand in 2023, with customers seeking their designs dedicated to lost loved ones. A particular favorite was tattooing handwriting from cards and notes.

Tattoo Trends of 2024
Fine line patterns and natural handwriting
Each year and decade has its own style. In the 1950s, Nautical-themed ink was the the height of its popularity alongside styles to emphasise masculinity. By the 1970s, the hippie peace symbol was undoubtedly the most popular.
Already Ive had a lot of people requesting fine line tattoos, especially in handwriting style. Very much delicate looking tattoos, Amie said. Fine line pattentry like stars and lotus flowers are also very popular right now.
Traditional tattoos and timeless designs
Amie also predicts that traditional tattoos will also make a return, namely pattern-based works that used to cover the arms and torso of just about every man in the 2000s. Thankfully, clocks, lions, and roses did not rank on her predictions despite being increasingly popular on Instagram.
White tattoos and monochromatic
Though not an especially new concept, Amie said that white ink highlights are becoming steadily more popular as people accentuate monochromatic designs with touches of white.
Thomas Boyce, another artist from Brass House and Amies brother, reiterated Amies belief about fine-line tattoos making a return. He also said that modern interpretations of classic styles will make a resurgence like butterflies, barbed wire, and flames.
