‘Sad Hamster’ meme

The meme is a sweet grey hamster with huge black eyeballs, which always appears alongside a sad violin tune. It’s not clear where it came from, but the video was first shared on Twitter/X on February 9 by a user called @Doguindolink.

It was then posted on TikTok and spread like wildfire as people began using it as a reaction image. For example, one viral video shared by beauty giant Clarins says “You don’t need any more skincare” with the sad hamster placed underneath.

Another clip adds “When your boyfriend says he can’t come and see you today,” so it’s always used in a situation where someone would feel upset. Some are even adding a pink bow to the hamster’s head for an extra touch of cuteness.

What is the song?

The song in the background probably sounds really familiar. It’s a track called Woe Is Me! from the Nickelodeon cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants which is used throughout the series during melodramatic moments.

Woe Is Me! is first heard in episode 3b, titled “I was a Teenage Gary” when the famous sponge says: “Squidward, something is wrong with Gary! Squidward!”

However, the most notable is in episode 48b, “Squilliam Returns,” when Mr. Krabs plays a sped up version on the world’s smallest violin.

People are obsessed

The ‘Sad Hamster’ memes are cracking people up on TikTok, and people are taking to Twitter/X to share their obsession.

One person wrote: “The TikTok’s with the hamster with the sad violin music are so good.”

“I’m literally so obsessed with that sad hamster you have no clue,” said another.

A third person added: “The sad hamster meme is everything I’ve ever needed in life.”

“Sad hamster is my latest obsession. Get ready to see a lot of them on your FYP,” someone else wrote.

Another said: “The sad hamster memes are my favourite ever.”
