Why your phone says ‘SOS Only’ as AT&T experiences nationwide outage

Social media has been in flames today as many AT&T customers are left wondering why their phones say SOS onlyfollowing the nationwide outage.

As reported by Downdectector, AT&T, Cricket Wireless, FirstNet, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular, Boost Mobile, Consumer Cellular and Straight Talk are all experiencing connectivity issues.

T-Mobile told The Focus: “We did not experience an outage. Our network is operating normally. Down Detector is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks.”

Why does my phone say SOS only?

On Wednesday, phone users were reporting connectivity issues across the United States as AT&T and a range of other networks seemingly collapsed. Where their signal strength would usually be displayed, customers were seeing a tab reading SOS Only.

If you have an iPhone 13 or earlier, you will instead see a banner reading no service, as reported by Laptop Mag

Though SOS Only sounds like the world is collapsing and were about to enter a natural disaster film, it simply means that the cellular connection has been severed. Though annoying, its nothing to worry about in the long term.

Sadly, as its a nationwide issue, there isnt a lot the average customer can do to rectify the situation. Instead, keep checking online for further updates and hope AT&T fixes the problem soon.

At the time of writing, neither AT&T nor the other networks had issued a statement.

Phone users are angry

People have taken to social media to moan about the AT&T outage, as one person scathed on Twitter: I know I better see some credits on my bill next month #ATTdown.

Me trying to figure out whether I can use this network outage as a time to disconnect or if I should be worried, another person said, while a third added, Imagine getting stranded in the middle of nowhere and not being able to reach anyone cause your phone carrier is AT&T #ATTdown.

Earlier today, one person wrote on Instagram: Yo why is the service down its been since like 3:30 and yall have yet to send an alert out? Bad business techniques.
