Are corset piercings becoming 2024s most extreme comeback beauty trend?

Corset piercings are seemingly coming back into fashion in 2024 as social media users adorn their bodies with lacey ribbons and edgy chains.

Though corsets have been around for centuries, the piercing style only popped up in the 1980s and 1990s as a form of rebellion. It was often linked to fetish, sex, and gay culture.

Are corset piercings making a comeback?

The style of piercing was all the rage from around 2010 to 2015, with people adorning their bodies with up to dozens of steel hoops.

“Corset piercings are like the new jewelry now,” Piercing store owner Paul Stoll told SFG in 2010. “I think they are beautiful. It’s like taking a concept of something external, a corset, and internalizing it to accent your own body.

It does appear the trend is coming back into fashion as it sits with 94 million views on TikTok. In one video, posted by user Nalla Belle (@windytree420), she could be seen walking down a staircase with 40 piercings connected by what appeared to be velvet tassels. Admittedly, the style was quite captivating with the added black bow.

Despite the 1.8 million likes and 18.2 million views, the social media platform was not convinced by the practicality.

One person said: I watched someone get her corset piercing ripped out. She was in so much pain I could never.

What if it gets caught on something and rips your skin out, another questioned, while a third added, Yes those are cool but my anxiety every time I think of someone jokingly pulling them.

But, as Nalla further explained, corset piercings are not permanent. Because they are only surface piercings, your skin would inevitably reject them. They are simply for play and fun.

She said: Theyre play piercings! They only stay in for photos but are taken out the same day! Because theyre surface piercings, the skin would reject them so theyre not designed to heal w/ jewelry in.

Experts previously slandered the graphic trend

Plastic Surgeon Kevin Hancock hit out at the trend over a decade ago when it first rose to prominence, with celebs like Lady Gaga spotted sporting it.

I can’t believe it’s something that people would be attracted to. Any piercing, superficial or otherwise, produces a scar, and different people scar in different ways, he argued.

For some, the scarring may be slight but for others, it can produce problems where the tissue overgrows and you end up with a red lump which is permanent. In some cases, this can be absolutely horrendous.

He added: I have to say it seems absolutely barking to me. I was amazed when I saw pictures of this piercing – it would be extremely painful and it’s only temporary. This is a row of rings that could also bleed and become infected. There is a risk of the rings pulling the skin and also becoming caught on something.
