TikTok theory that you can see two moons due to ‘rare reflection’ debunked

Videos on TikTok and YouTube claiming an impossible astronomical event on February 8th, 2024 that will result in a “two moons” sighting due to a rare reflection couldn’t be further than the truth.

The moon will be in the Waning Crescent phase on Thursday with just 3% illumination, let alone appearing in full form.

TikTok video about moon reflection on February 8th is fake

The wild theory, suggesting the moon’s reflection in the night sky falsely claims that the astrological event is occurring “after hundreds of years.”

The voice-over in the videos claims: “On the 8th of February, there will be moon reflection, which means in the night, an even bigger moon will be visible on the opposite side of our real moon. But in reality, it’ll be a reflection of our moons. You’ll see two moons in the sky, which you might have never seen in your life.”

The source of the rumors isn’t clear, but a lot of TikTok users have come to believe it. People look forward to witnessing the rare sighting, which isn’t going to occur as such a phenomenon simply doesn’t exist.

None of the official space organizations have reported the supposed moon reflection, nor has it ever occurred in history.

Furthermore, an “even bigger” image of the real moon is impractical as there is no mirroring object in the sky to reflect the celestial body.

The same video claims a second event on February 9th, when a falling cluster of stars in the direction Northern Hemisphere will be visible. There may be some truth to this as the Alpha Centaurid meteor shower is expected to reach its peak on Thursday and Friday night.

TikTok users call out the wild theory

Not everybody is convinced by the fake astronomical phenomenon. In the comments under the video, people continue to question the logic behind the same as it makes no sense.

One user asked: “What in the sky is going to reflect the moon to create a bigger one?”

“But February 9th is the new moon. How are we going to see two of them when the real moon isn’t visible? lol,” read another comment, and while another added: “Tonight the moon is a sliver of a crescent. It’s gone for the next three days. how are we supposed to see 2 when we can’t even see 1”

Another user wrote: “So the moon will be in front of a mirror. lol.”
